The Homer Fund: Shelly's Story

November 22, 2019

Shelly was initially a reluctant participant in The Homer Fund, The Home Depot’s employee emergency assistance program, because she thought it would take away from other associates in need.

After receiving an outpouring of love from her co-workers, Shelly decided to accept help from The Homer Fund.  And she is tickled pink by the special support that she receives on Sunday from her fellow associates.

Shelly was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and The Homer Fund provided funds to help with Shelly’s mounting bills that weren’t covered by insurance. Her co-workers also have bake sales and wear pink on Sundays in support for Shelly and breast cancer awareness.

“Just the support from them, it’s incredible,” Shelly says. “Because of them, I feel like I have to definitely beat this! I can’t let it win.”

The 57-year-old mother of five, plus two feisty mixed breed dogs, believes the love shown to her by associates and customers keeps her going. “I think I would have succumbed to this by now,” Shelly says. “But they keep me going. They really do!”

Now in its 20th year, The Homer Fund has awarded $186 million to more than 144,000 Home Depot families. Every dollar that associates donate to The Homer Fund goes right back to associates like Shelly through the Direct Grant and Matching Grant Programs.
